Harrogate Symphony Orchestra’s Spring Concert will have a vibrant South American flavour thanks to a collaboration with the world class INCA music group.

The event on March 23 at the Royal Hall promises to be an exhilarating and fascinating musical journey through Native South American Folk Music.

Song and dance, Cancion and Ballecito, Bolivian, Mexican and Peruvian, the music is brought to life by these musicians, all virtuosos in their own field, who are hotfooting it from Abbey Road Studios where they record scores for Blockbuster Films and major TV series.

The orchestra will be performing with INCA, specialists in performing South American music on native instruments.

The concert will be preceded by a special children’s workshop event with INCA. The start time of the evening performance has been brought forward to 7pm so the young musicians can perform pieces they have learned on native South American instruments.

Tickets (£13 / £11) are on sale now from the Harrogate Theatre Box Office, 01423 502 116
Young people 11- 18 yrs half price, under 11s free. www.harrogateorchestra.org.uk

Harrogate Spring Flower Show has been voted as the best gardening in the country according to a survey by Which magazine.

The Spring Flower Show, that takes place at the Show Ground, was rated top in the survey of 2300 consumers, with the Autumn Flower Show coming in third place.

The announcement comes just a few days after Harrogate Flower Shows were voted Most Popular Gardening Event of the Year by over 47,000 viewers of the specialist TV network, The Horticultural Channel.

Show Director Martin Fish, said:

“The results of the Which? survey and the Horticultural Channel Awards are fantastic news and a tremendous affirmation of the hard work and dedication of everyone involved with Harrogate Flower Shows, from exhibitors and garden designers to staff and volunteers. We would like to thank all those who voted for us or took part in the survey for their support and recognition.

We are immensely proud of our 102-year heritage of supporting and promoting horticulture and of the very special relationship we enjoy with our visitors, many of whom return year after year. We constantly look for ways to improve and develop in response to their views, indeed the 2013 Spring show will feature twice the number of show gardens as a direct result of the comments we received from our visitors last year.”

The Spring Flower show takes place from 25th- 28th April at the Yorkshire Show Ground. Tickets are available from £12.00 via www.flowershow.org.uk

ANNIVERSARY APPEAL FOR FESTIVAL MEMORABILIA AND ALUMNI PARTICIPATION IN 2013

2013 sees the eagerly anticipated 40th anniversary of one of Harrogate’s foremost cultural events – the Harrogate International Youth Festival (Music and Performing Arts) – and organisers are appealing to residents and fans alike to come forward with their own HIYF memories for a special exhibition.

As part of a multitude of celebrations to ring in the event’s 40th year, the committee is requesting that previous participants, conductors, audience members and fans of HIYF’s rich history come forward with anything that may be put, on loan, into an exhibition during the event.

Items such as programmes, pin badges, t-shirts, sheet music and photos are all welcome to be showcased in what will be the most significant collection of the event’s memorabilia to date.

In addition, past participants are invited to join in with a one off, group performance of an Alumni massed band, Choir or Dance. Interested parties should email Claire at the Liaison Committee: HIYF1973@gmail.com.

HIYF 2013 takes place at venues and locations across Harrogate and the surrounding area from 29th March to 4th April and will once again ignite the town with exciting and diverse performances from local, regional and international groups.

The success and longevity of this event is often attributed to the wide variety of music and cultural performers that descend on Harrogate each Easter. International groups have come from as far as Canada, Africa and China to take part in what is widely regarded as one of the finest Youth Festival’s on offer globally.

Last year saw the return of the beloved Easter Parade and the 40th anniversary spectacle promises to top even last year’s hugely successful march. Fans of the Festival can expect the biggest ever event in 2013 with even more exciting events in the run up to the week long programme.

Mike Clark, Managing Director of ECE Travel LTD (organisers of the Festival) said: “We really hope that the huge number of people we know love this event and have ardently supported it for years, will help us put together something special to celebrate this wonderful milestone.

“Even some great memories you have that we can write up for the exhibition would be wonderful. Anyone with any suggestions or thoughts can contact Amy Keen at One PR via akeen@onepublicrelations.com to submit – the same goes for any previous participants that might like to get involved with the Alumni performance. 2013 will be our best event yet and we look forward to sharing further details with you all in the coming weeks.”
